Two kinds of Salford job, and the city centre one is all about timing
Salford splits neatly in two for us. West of the M60 it is yards and industrial units: Eccles, Swinton, Worsley, Walkden, Irlam and Cadishead, where the work is containers, cabins, plant and steel and the only real question is whether the gateway is wide enough. Then there is the other Salford, along Chapel Street, round Ordsall and out at the quays and MediaCity, and that is a different discipline entirely.
Down there the lift is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the window. Streets are busy, footpaths are in use, there are residents in the flats either side, and the slot you get to stand a lorry in the road with its legs down might be an hour early in the morning. So those jobs get planned rather than just booked, and we would sooner talk it through than guess.
We are based at Miles Platting, a few minutes up the road, so we are not travelling far to get to any of it. Down Regent Road, along the A6 through the centre or out on the M602, depending where in the borough you are. We do not have an office in Salford. We just happen to be very close to it.

Sometimes it takes two lorries
On a confined city site you occasionally cannot do the job with one vehicle, either because there is nowhere to stack what comes off or because the load has to be split to get it out. Two lorries nose to tail in the same access is a normal enough arrangement, and it is quicker than two separate visits.

How much notice do you need for a city centre or quayside lift?
More than for a yard job. If the street has to be coned off, a footpath closed or a barrier moved, that takes arranging and the window you get may be early morning or late evening. Give us a few days where you can. A straightforward lift inside a compound we can often do at short notice.
Can you work in a restricted window, say before the offices open?
Yes. We start at six, so an early slot before a building fills up or a street gets busy is normal for us. Saturday mornings work well too. Tell us the window when you book and we will plan the job round it rather than turning up and finding out.
Do you charge for travel, given you are just up the road?
No. Salford is our nearest borough and there is no travel element in the price. What you are paying for is the vehicle, the driver and the time on site.
We have residents either side of the site. Is that a problem?
It is something to plan around rather than a problem. It usually means keeping the outriggers off a resident's parking, not blocking an access for longer than we said, and not making a racket at six in the morning if we can avoid it. Tell us what the neighbours are and we will work to it.
Can you move a sculpture, a planter or a piece of street furniture?
Yes, and we do a fair bit of it around the quays and the city centre. These are usually slow, careful, one off lifts with slings and a banksman rather than quick yard work. Email us and describe the piece and how it is fixed down at the moment.
Do you work outside Salford?
Yes, across the whole of Greater Manchester and the North West, and nationally as well. A unit collected from a Salford site can go straight out to another part of the country on the same vehicle.
