Two very different jobs in one corner of the county
West Cheshire asks us for two things that have almost nothing in common. North of Chester, around Ellesmere Port, Stanlow and up towards Helsby and Frodsham, it is heavy industry and process work: tanks, vessels, pumps, skids, steel frames and switchrooms going onto plants and into compounds, with inductions, permits and a booking slot before anything moves. The access is usually wide. The paperwork and the sequence are what make the day.
Then there is the city itself. Inside the walls, and along the streets running off them, the work is the opposite: narrow, overlooked and careful. Listed frontages, setted surfaces, restricted loading, shop fits and hotel and pub refurbishments where a machine, a plant room unit or a sign has to go in without marking anything. How long does the run down from Manchester take?
About an hour to Chester on a clear morning, straight down the M56, and a little less to Frodsham or Helsby. Ellesmere Port is much the same. Northwich and Winsford are nearer again if you come off earlier. It is a straightforward run, which means an early start usually gets a full day of work in down here.
Is there an extra charge for travelling from Manchester?
There is no separate travel fee. The journey is built into the price along with the vehicle and the time on site. The M56 is a fast road so west Cheshire is not an expensive place for us to reach, and if your load is heading further south or into North Wales it may sit on a run we are making anyway.
Can you work inside the city walls?
Often, but it needs planning rather than turning up. The streets inside the walls are narrow, a good number of the buildings are listed, there are restrictions on where a lorry can stand and often something overhead to keep clear of.
