Reaching over things, and shifting plant along the M6
Two sorts of job come out of Wigan borough more than any other. The first is reach work. A lot of properties here have the space at the back but no way through to it, so whatever it is, a pool shell, a pod, a garden room or a machine, has to go up and over a fence, a hedge or a wall rather than through a gate. The boom does that from wherever the lorry can legally stand, which is why we always ask what is in front of the house as well as behind it.
The second is plant. The M6 corridor through junctions 25, 26 and 27 is lined with hire yards, contractors and industrial estates, and there is a constant flow of machines going out to sites and coming back again. A good deal of the former colliery land around Bickershaw, Hindley and Platt Bridge is industrial units now, and much of it is ground that was made rather than built on, so where the outriggers go down is worth a thought.
We are based in Miles Platting in Manchester, not in Wigan. It is about forty five minutes out, either along the A580 or round on the M60, M61 and M6. We travel to you and we say so plainly, because there is no depot here to pretend about.

A run of units, not just one delivery
Plenty of Wigan jobs are not a single lift. Can you lift over a garden fence?

How long does it take you to reach Wigan from Manchester?
Roughly forty five minutes to the town, either out on the A580 East Lancashire Road or round the M60 and up the M61 and M6, depending on traffic and where exactly you are. Leigh and Atherton are a bit closer. Standish and Orrell are a bit further.
Is there a travel charge for coming out to Wigan?
There is no separate travel line on the invoice, but distance does feed into the price on a job this far out, because it is time on the road. It is usually a smaller factor than how long we are on site.
Can you collect a machine from a yard off the M6 and take it somewhere else?
Yes, that is a lot of what we do around Wigan. Plant collected from one of the yards along the motorway and dropped on a site, or taken off a site at the end of a job and brought back. We can load it, strap it and move it without anyone at either end needing a machine to help us.
Do you work on a Saturday morning?
Saturday until half twelve, yes. It is a useful slot for residential work where you would rather not have a lorry parked across a street on a weekday, and for estates that are quiet at the weekend.
Do you go further out, towards St Helens and Preston?
Yes. Once we are on the M6 corridor it is all the same run, so Skelmersdale, St Helens, Chorley and Preston are no trouble, and we work nationally as well.
